Flat Holm Island
Sail into a Great Day Out at Wales’ Flat Holm Island
Just five miles off the coast of Cardiff, the breath-taking island of Flat Holm offers another world of incredible history and wildlife. And with so much to discover, the famous island promises an unforgettable family day out!
Flat Holm has been a retreat for monks since the Dark Ages and has acted as a sanctuary for Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, silver miners and smugglers.
Fortified in Victorian times and once again in World War II, the stunning island is famous for receiving the first ever radio message across the water in 1897.
So how can you get there?
It’s super easy to get across to Flat Holm, with trips available all year round! Pre-organised RIB boat trips that carry up to 12 passengers leave from Cardiff several times a month.
These trips allow you three to six hours to explore the island, depending on tide times, and give you the option of purchasing a self-guided tour pack or a free guided tour. If, on the other hand, you are travelling in a large group, or you fancy staying on the island overnight, you can simply tailor your own visit to the island.
Once you’re there, the enjoyment is yours for the taking! Relax and soak up the serene atmosphere and awe-inspiring views; sink down a beer at The Gull and Leek, the most southerly pub in Wales, or explore the island’s fascinating history and wildlife.
Visiting with children? This beautiful island fuses education with fun! Why not ask about a certain topic your little ones are studying at school? The friendly team of staff at Flat Holm will be more than happy to provide some relevant educational activities. They can even develop a bespoke programme of activities just for you if you are staying on the island for a few nights!
And of course, when you are done exploring, learning and having fun, you can take a little piece of Flat Holm home with you from the island’s gift shop.
From souvenirs to postcards to Fairtrade snacks, there is something for all the family to remember this wonderful place.
