A COASTGUARD volunteer has been honoured for a house which he built in between life-saving operations in Mumbles.
Builder and carpenter Ben Shepherd spent 12 hours a day for nine months on the three-bedroom home.
And at the same time, the 30-year-old occasionally had to 'down tools' and join the Mumbles Coastguard Search and Rescue Team when calls came in for help.
Members of the coastguard team played a key role in helping to complete construction of the house which overlooks the Mumbles Light House.
Mr Shepherd said: "The project would have taken much longer and not been so enjoyable without the unstinting assistance of my mates on the Mumbles Coastguard Search and Rescue Team.
"They worked tirelessly alongside me on days off from their normal works."
Mr Shepherd has been rewarded for his efforts in building the house with the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) New Home Warranty award in the category of best self-build developer.
Over the past eight years, he has built two houses in Limeslade and one in Rhossili, and said his recent award made all his efforts worthwhile.

He said: "It is great. It makes it all worthwhile when someone recognises the effort that goes into the house."
Mr Shepherd said the location of his house also came in handy when he was called to help a group of holidaymakers cut off at high tide.
He said: "By the time we were paged, we knew what to anticipate.
"It is all about good laughs and a great working environment.
"I have worked with good and bad teams in the past.
"Now the balance is just right both professionally and in my voluntary work."
His award-wining house was built with the help of contractors including Browen, which was responsible for groundwork, and Llanelli steel contractors HT Structures.
He said: "I always knew the property had potential but it took a long time to get funding and get the bank on side, but we got there eventually. It has turned into a fantastic house."
